American University Park, Washington D.C. (AU Park) sits on the outskirts of the city, just within the boundary line. Although AU Park takes its name from American University, most of the campus is actually located in neighboring Tenleytown. Though it is mostly residential, this neighborhood has plenty of shopping, so locals never have to leave the area. AU Park offers a serene and friendly community, with all the quiet of the suburbs and easy access to public transit. In AU Park, D.C., there is plenty to do and see. Turtle Park is a favorite local hangout spot and a great place to spend the day for outdoor fun with an extensive playground, tennis courts, basketball hoops and plenty of green space. Residents can finish their day with shopping along Wisconsin or Massachusetts Avenue. At the Spring Valley Shopping Center on Massachusetts Avenue, you can grab a morning cup of coffee or visit the bank. A trip by Wagshal's market and deli is a must. This not-so-well-kept local secret has been serving up specialty sandwiches and fine wines for 90 years. With the Friendship Heights Metro Station to the north and the Tenleytown-AU station to the east, public transit is easily accessible. A quick metro ride southeast takes you the 2.5 miles to the National Zoo and other museums. Heading west takes you to the banks of the Potomac River, while a trip north brings you into Friendship Village. Several Zipcars and a Capital Bikeshare Station also help to make the neighborhood easily navigable without owning a car.
